SVG AND Vector-Based Technologies

This location is shown only to members

Now that you’ve gotten the high-level overview of HTML5 from our first meeting, let’s dig a little deeper and see exactly what kind of things you can do with it!

We’re excited to have Oswald Campesato, who's been using SVG ever since its inception back in 1999 come and first give us a short overview of SVG then share with us his passion for SVG and show us how we can tap into this amazing technology - now that it is officially part of HTML5. He’ll go through some of the exciting tools available, show off some mind-blowing graphics, and a whole lot of other ways to use SVG with HTML5.

Some of the things that will be discussed...

  • People to Know
  • What is SVG?
  • The Past and the Present
  • Browser Support
  • Code Samples
  • HTML5 Canvas
  • Some SVG Tools
  • SVG Slide Show
  • SVG and XSLT
  • SVG and XQuery
  • SVG and JAXB
  • Who uses SVG
  • The Future of SVG
  • What about Mobile?

A little about Oswald…
Aside from being the co-Founder and CEO of a stealth-mode Web 2.0 company in the Social Media space, Oswald Campesato has worked for various companies, including JustSystems of Japan, Oracle, AAA, and several start-ups, and he has held numerous roles, including CTO, VP of Product Development, Director, Senior Development Manager, and Java developer. Oswald is passionate about technology (he has written four books!), and he has recently started the process of filing for patents. He and his co-founder will focus on making their company successful before he starts another book project. You definitely won’t want to miss this presentation.

It was good, though a little hard to hear. This is all new to me, so I don't know how this relates to existing technology. Would be nice to have it put in that context.

I enjoyed Oswald's talk on SVG. In the past, I've mostly worked with databases.

The speaker was very hard to hear and was actually turned down at some point (?). I came to this meetup because I didn't really know what SVG was. Perhaps this was meant for folks that had more of a background, or it was a complement to the first two HTML 5 meetups. The code meant nothing to me, which is good because I couldn't really see it. Overall I was left wondering why I should care. How is this going to aid development? Is it only interesting to people who are working with related code and have an academic interest in or is it something to take notice of? However, I am really looking forward to learning more about new directions in HTML in future meetings. Thanks.

I really appreciate the effort of the organizers and sponsors. Thank you for putting this together, I am grateful to have an opportunity to network. I was a little disappointed with the content of the presentation but I came in expecting another "HTML5 and The Future Of The Web". Looking forward to attending the next one.

Speaker was hard to hear. Sample code was hard to see.

Overall, the location was great, it would have been better to have seen SVG examples in a real-world context, for example on the web, and how it could replace other formats, rather than as standalone graphical images that reminded me of algorithm type art that was being done back in the early 90's. The speaker was not very engaging and the presentation didn't really offer any insight into the potential of SVG or vector-based technologies from a web design or developer perspective.

The talk was an interesting historical perspective on SVG as it stood 3-5 years ago. I was hoping to hear more about SVG and potential integration with current and future browsers, as well as how SVG is moving forward in the mobile space.
